FC San Diego is a non-profit youth soccer organization that fields both recreational (RB Rec Soccer) and competitive teams. Based in Rancho Bernardo, California, FC San Diego is the consolidation of two great area soccer programs: The Rancho Bernardo Youth Soccer Association (RBYSA) and The San Diego Soccer Club (SDSC). Youth Soccer in Rancho Bernardo started in 1978 with an All-Star boy's team called the Bernardo Hornets. In 1981 the yellow and black striped Hornets added another boys team along with a few younger girls' teams. The club continued to grow, and nine years later, a competitive older girls' program was developed. At that point, it was decided that the club would change its name to the San Diego Soccer Club to more accurately reflect the demographics of the players. RBYSA was formed in 1990...(more info to come.) By 2006, the popularity of youth soccer in San Diego County had increased significantly. The number of soccer clubs in North County had grown considerably, and resources were spread thin. The Director of Soccer Operations at RBYSA Brian Quinn (Former San Diego Sockers Player and Coach) and SDSC Raffi Ruotolo (Former World Champion San Diego Sockers Player) saw the opportunity that a merger of their two clubs would create for the soccer players in the San Diego community, and spearheaded a campaign to merge. In December 2006, FC San Diego was created from these two organizations, keeping the best of both clubs and benefiting from nearly three decades of youth soccer in the North County area. FC San Diego has a recreational soccer program that is a childhood staple in the Rancho Bernardo Community. RB Rec. Soccer is for children from age 3 through 14. The coaches are parent volunteers who are trained by the FC San Diego professional coaching staff. Our program is designed to introduce and improve age appropriate technical and tactical skills in an environment that will foster an appreciation and enjoyment of the game. All games are held on Saturdays throughout the Fall and Spring seasons. In addition, RB Rec Soccer offers skills clinics and All-star games at the end of each season. The FC San Diego competitive soccer program offers teams in every age group from U8 through U19 for those who are interested in a higher level of play. These teams are coached by a highly qualified international coaching staff that train and develop youth soccer players with the objective of having them ultimately qualify for College, Olympic, National Team, and Professional Soccer, such as Shannon MacMillan, Women's National Team Player and World Cup Champion, who played her youth soccer career with our club. Competitive coaching focuses on skill development in the early years and tactical abilities in the later years. And while winning is always our coaches' game objective, skill development of our young players is our focus. In addition, FC San Diego is dedicated to giving back to the community and working cooperatively with other leagues, clubs, and community service organizations. FC San Diego's first priority is the development of youth in our community.
